Aeration - This is the practice of introducing air into the root zone of the grass. Roots need air as well as water to survive. Aeration should be done yearly, preferably in the fall. Usually we seed when aerating. Aerating also relieves soil compaction due to clay soil or traffic. Aeration helps to break up thatch that can build from many varieties of grasses and conditions. Spike aerators tend to compact the soil even more by just pushing the soil. Core aerators work best by removing a plug. This creates a void which allows the soil to expand. By expanding, soil compaction is lessened.. The plug will naturally break down over time.
